Northern ToSIA Assessing Sustainability of Forest-based Activities in Rural Areas of the Northern Periphery

The NPP project Northern ToSIA carried the slogan Northern Forests Leading the Way to Sustainability and was successfully completed in 2011. It targeted regional and local stakeholders: researchers and representatives of national, regional and local authorities, as well as forest industry- and Sámi representatives and other forest users. The project demonstrated new ways to assess the sustainability of forest based activities in Northern Europe. Some of its key outcomes are:

several new regional case studies which were developed in a participatory process involving regional decision makers

a set of ToSIA dissemination materials for different target groups for scientists to the general public

Improvements to the Tool for Sustainability Impact Assessment – launched as ToSIA 2.0.

The case studies in Finland (North Karelia), Sweden (Malå Sami Village), Norway (Indre Helgeland) and Scotland (Cairngorms National Park) demonstrated how ToSIA applications can help decision-makers balance the demands from policies on different aspects of forestry, for example timber production, as well as from wildlife management and recreation.
