The coordination of national research activities of Member States and Associated States in the field of Ocean Energy

The objective of OCEANERA-NET is to coordinate activity between European countries and regions to support research and innovation in the ocean energy sector. Ocean energy includes the generation of renewable electricity from wave and tidal energy, salinity gradient and ocean thermal energy conversion.

A recent Communication from the European Commission on Blue Energy recognises the role ocean energy can play in contributing to future renewable energy targets, economic growth and job creation. OCEANERA-NET is one of a number of initiatives to help address the research and innovation challenges for the growth of the sector. It will work alongside the European Energy Research Alliance Ocean Energy Joint Programme, Ocean Energy Forum and Ocean Energy Technology and Innovation Platform to develop a shared vision and coordinated action plan.

The overall objective of OCEANERA-NET is to facilitate coordination of research in the ocean energy sector across Europe. The specific objectives include:

  • Promote information exchange, developing strong information exchange networks and links between the regions;
  • Assemble and analyse information and views on the management of current and planned ocean energy programmes;
  • Engage in a dialogue process on regional and national priorities: how they can work in synergy and progress towards joint programming;
  • Develop a common toolkit to enable the management and evaluation of joint transnational activities and calls;
  • Launch joint transnational activities and calls;
  • Promote a sustainable and growing coordinated research community for future calls and activities;
  • Act as leverage for further research and innovation funding at European, national or regional scale in the context of Horizon 2020 and the development of the cohesion policy 2014-2020.

Specifically OCEANERA-NET will work towards joint calls for collaborative research and innovation projects. These calls will be open to participants in the targeted countries to apply for funding to deliver projects which address the identified challenges. Our target is to launch a pilot joint call in November 2014, and further calls in 2015 and 2016.

"The Ocean Energy ERA-NET gives Scottish Enterprise an opportunity to participate in a strategic project which will lay the foundation for collaboration between national and regional funding agencies across the EU and support collaborative research project to help unlock the huge potential of the sector. SE’s role as Coordinator also allows us to work closely with other initiatives and stakeholders, such the Ocean Energy Forum, Ocean Energy Europe and TP Ocean."
