The objective of OCEANERA-NET is to coordinate activity between European countries and regions to support research and innovation in the ocean energy sector. Ocean energy includes the generation of renewable electricity from wave and tidal energy, salinity gradient and ocean thermal energy conversion.
A recent Communication from the European Commission on Blue Energy recognises the role ocean energy can play in contributing to future renewable energy targets, economic growth and job creation. OCEANERA-NET is one of a number of initiatives to help address the research and innovation challenges for the growth of the sector. It will work alongside the European Energy Research Alliance Ocean Energy Joint Programme, Ocean Energy Forum and Ocean Energy Technology and Innovation Platform to develop a shared vision and coordinated action plan.
The overall objective of OCEANERA-NET is to facilitate coordination of research in the ocean energy sector across Europe. The specific objectives include:
Specifically OCEANERA-NET will work towards joint calls for collaborative research and innovation projects. These calls will be open to participants in the targeted countries to apply for funding to deliver projects which address the identified challenges. Our target is to launch a pilot joint call in November 2014, and further calls in 2015 and 2016.
